What is push back racking?

Understanding what push back racking is and how it works will help you make an informed decision about whether or not this type of storage system will be the best fit for your workspace needs. At Commander Warehouse, we understand how important it is to choose the right storage solutions. That is why we carry a wide selection of storage options, including push back racking systems.

What is Push Back Racking?

Push back racking is a type of storage system that is designed to allow pallets to be stored from two to six deep on both sides of the aisle, creating a higher storage density than other types of racking systems. Since push back racking allows more pallets to be stored while also maintaining better selectivity, push back racking is the ideal solution for warehouses that want to increase handling time without slowing down product rotation.

How Push Back Racking Works?

Push back racking systems work by storing pallets on wheeled carts that rest on rails and operate using gravity. Since the rails are tilted slightly forward toward where the pallets are loaded and unloaded, forklift operators can easily load pallets onto the carts and push them back as the next pallet is loaded. When pallets are being unloaded, the front pallet acts as a brake for the pallets behind it until the pallet is fully removed and the other pallets are free to roll forward.

Benefits of Push Back Racking

Some of the main benefits of using push back racking include:

Better Inventory Control

All push back racking systems are designed to use a last-in-first-out (LIFO) system that makes it easier to control and track different types of inventory. This is because items that are placed last can be accessed more easily and it also allows for easy inventory rotation, which is especially useful for items that have a sell-by date.

Easier Loading and Retrieval

Since push back racking features an open design, forklift operators are able to deposit loads more quickly without ever having to worry about removing items and reorganizing them to make room for new items.

Create More Storage Space

Compared to other types of pallet racking, push back racking systems offer an increased amount of storage space that can be used to help free up room in other parts of the warehouse. Since push back racking is designed for storing pallets and large quantities of items, installing this type of racking system can clear up space on other shelving units for smaller items.
