How to Organize a Parts Department

How to organize a parts department

Knowing how to organize a parts department properly can help improve efficiency and decrease downtime in the workplace. At Commander Warehouse, we want to help your business run as smoothly as possible. That is why our expert team has put together a list of some simple tips for better organizing your parts department.

1. Remove Any Clutter

Decreasing the clutter in a workspace can make it easier for employees to find the parts that they need and to concentrate on the work at hand. Consider cleaning up your parts department by installing high-density cabinets for smaller parts and shelving or racking for larger parts.

2. Organize by Manufacturer or Type of Parts

While it may seem like a good idea to organize parts by the vendor you receive them from, this can make it harder for employees to find the parts they need quickly. Instead, try organizing your parts department by manufacturer or type of parts. Doing so will make it easier for employees to quickly access parts while they work, minimizing the amount of downtime spent looking for what they need.

3. Maximize Vertical Space

If you are working in a tight space, utilizing the vertical space in your shop or warehouse can be a great option for creating a clutter-free working environment. The more items that you are able to store on higher shelves or racks, the more floorspace that can be cleared for your employees to move in. Consider investing in a few rolling ladders to make it easier for employees to reach the parts they need.

4. Keep Heavy Parts Close to the Floor

When decluttering your parts department, it is always a good idea to organize parts so that the heaviest items are as close to the floor as possible. Storing heavy parts close to the floor will lower the chances of employees suffering from strains or back injuries.

5. Keep Frequently Used Parts Close By

Placing frequently used parts close to where employees are working can help lower downtime, as they will not have to waste time moving back and forth to get what they need.
