How to Safely Operate a Self-Dumping Hopper

While a self-dumping hopper can be a great way to improve efficiencies in the workplace, it is important to ensure that all employees are practicing proper safety techniques when operating the machinery to help prevent accidents. How to Use a Self-Dumping Hopper Safely

In order to use a self-dumping hopper safely, you should:

Perform an Inspection of the Hopper

Before using a self-dumping hopper, it is important to first inspect the machine to ensure that the latch assembly and all of the other parts are in still in optimal working condition and have not been damaged. When inspecting the hopper, make sure to also pay attention to the specified weight capacity for the forklift that will be used to lift the hopper to ensure that the hopper’s weight will not affect the stability of the forklift.

Make Sure the Hopper is Secure

The self-dumping hopper’s latch holder should always be in the locked position unless the hopper is being dumped. When dumping the hopper, it is important to make sure that you properly wrap and secure the safety chain around the forklift mast to prevent the hopper from falling off the forklift while it is being transported.

Lift the Hopper with a Forklift

In order to safely lift a self-dumping hopper with a forklift, the forks will need to be inserted into the opening at the base of hopper and then spread as far apart as possible without the forks extending beyond the front of the hopper’s base. The forks can then be lifted up and the mast can be tilted back to prevent the load from slipping during transit.

Empty the Hopper

While keeping the forklift mast tilted back, an employee can unlock the latch holder before raising the forks to the right height for dumping the hopper. It is important to ensure that all employees keep clear of the hopper when the handle is released and the hopper is tilted slightly forward into the optimal dumping position. Once the hopper has been emptied, the latch holder should be returned to the locked position.
